Camping:
Escalante State Park
On-Line Reservations Now Available!
Escalante State Park is located just West of Escalante off of highway 12.
This
park is on the shores of Wide Hollow Reservoir. The reservoir is 145
acres and provides the opportunity to catch Rainbow Trout, Bluegills and
Largemouth Bass. If you don’t have a boat you can rent canoes for $5.00 per
hour, $10.00 for four hours, or $20.00 for the whole day.
Another draw to the park is the petrified wood that can be viewed here. The
Petrified Forest hiking trail is a one mile round trip where you can view
various examples of petrified wood. The Trail of Sleeping Rainbows
continues three quarters of a mile past the Petrified Forest trail for some
even bigger and better examples of petrified wood. The visitors center also
has some very nice colorful specimens.
It is illegal to take any of the petrified wood. Local legend has it that
bad things befall those who take any, heed the curse.
There is a very nice 22 site campground located at the park. The sites are
fairly well spaced and feature picnic tables with awnings. There are modern
restrooms, showers and a dump station as well.
The fee for day use is $5.00, campsites are $14.00 per night with a $7.00
reservation fee.
This campground makes a very close base to explore the Grand Staircase
Escalante. The GSE virtually surrounds the park. There are many nearby
slot canyons, hiking trails, scenic drives, and ATV trails.
